The government gave work to help to keep the people alive. The district was not effected by diseases. - The year before the Great Famine in 1846-47 the potatoes were very plentiful. But the year after there were none at all. Every one that was planted rotted in the ground. People got it very hard to live and the ate Indian meal porridge at all their meals. The rich people boiled big boilers of real porridge and the poor got canfuls of it. When they had nothing to eat, thousands died with the disease "Cholera".
