It is an old custom when people are buying cattle from one another for the seller to give the buyer what is called "Luck penny" - a sum of money according to the price of the beast.
There is a special place at fairs for cattle called the "fair green".
In olden times the fair day was a special day for young and old as all kinds of amusements were held on that day.
Another old custom was, "Hiring" servant boys and girls on fair days.- Collector
