  1. The old people say that Rev. Theobald Mathew came to Kells and administered the pledge to thousands.
    One woman says he pledged them and they blind drunk kneeling in the gutter. His cry was "Here goes in the name of God".
    A woman named Annie Owens Carnaross suffered from the Blessed Sickness. She came to Fr Mathew to be blessed by him. He laid his hand on her head, blessed her, and told her not to eat meat. She never took the "Blessed Sickness" after that.
