  1. Eighty years ago children had not the advantage of First Class National Schools they have now. In those days what were known as hedge schools were in nearly every parish. Such a one existed at Ballyknock in the parish of Whitehall.
    The teacher's name was Barney Kelly. He was a native of Ballyknock. He was a very small man and had to use a crutch when walking. He taught school in his house from ten o'clock to three. He had about forty pupils. There was no roll-call. Barney inquired every morning, "Are we all here" and the children told him who was absent. He was a very poor man his only means of living being the penny a week which each child brought him. He had to be paid on Friday. Thursday evening he reminded them to be in early on Friday morning and bring their usual subscription.
