  1. In this district there are many proverbs made use of. Some of these proverbs were made by people of this district. Others are often used that are in use all over Ireland.
One time there was a man who lived in Moortown, Castlepollard, building a wall. A man who was passing asked him why he mixed the mortar and put stones in as well. The builder answered "Hard upon hard makes a bad stone wall and soft upon soft makes none at all"
Another old man used to say to anyone who was lazy or fond of staying in bed that "it is better to wear out shoes than sheets."
There are many other proverbs used. The following are some of them
"A stitch in times saves nine."
