- How Tallow Candles were made. The way tallow candles were made. Some sheep's suet was got and melted in a pot. Then cords were got and loops were put on the ends of them. The cords were cut the length of a candle. Then the cords were dipped into the boiling suet and a rod was placed across the pot to hang the cords on when dipped. Then you waited until the cords cooled and dipped them again. It took so many cords and so many dips to make a pound of candles.
