- When I was about five years old my mother took me to a potato-field one day to dig a dinner of early potatoes. It was a lovely day in the middle of summer. She gave me a cut of bread and butter and told me to eat it while she was engaged digging the potatoes. I sat down on the ridge about six yards from where she was digging. I was looking around me and to my surprise I saw a little man coming up the furrow to where I was sitting. I was so amazed that I could not stir or move. I just kept looking at the little man. The leipreachan approached me and his eyes were fixed upon me. He took the bread out of my hand and disappeared back down the furrow he had come(continues on next page)
