- St. Martin was ground to death in a mill in the defence of his faith. In honour of his tragic death no mill wheel, and in places especially in the West of Ireland, not even a cart wheel is allowed to turn on that day.
Here in the Midlands, in some places all threshing operations are stopped on St. Martin's Day - the old custom of no wheel turning on that day in honour of the Saint being fully observed.- Collector
