  1. Mrs O'Brien, Black Quarry told me there were many schools in different places in this district in olden times but there is no sign of them now. There was a school at the back at Bacon's bridge about half a mile from Balrath. The teacher's name was Mr Brady. It is about sixty years since he taught there.
    There was another school at Brien's gate of Black Quarry. Mr Mealia was the teacher's name. Each pupil had a stone to sit on. It was said that Mr Mealia made good pupils. It was a day school.
