    A Defence Fund was started by the tenants and in the Spring of 1908 the first seizure for non-payment of rent was made in Corry. The cows, one, belonging to James McLoughlin were driven off - meetings were held, and Bond was made a subject of ridicule - being booked on every occasion he showed out - Bottomless bottles were blown his servants were attacked and treated with great disrespect, missles being thrown at them as they went and came from Mass.
    Other seizures followed - and an ejectment process was got against one of the tenants who owed a lot of rent (Dardis of Joanstown). Sooner than allow this to go on they decided to buy out their land without getting the ranch attached to the estate - namely Caraun. - another ranch was given over to the Land Commission to divide on the tenants with the smallest farms - and thus was Modlagh.
    The untenanted Land of Caraun consisting of 400 acres, went in to the Bankruptcy Court under Judge Ross, and the wall surrounding it was knocked down, and ten to twelve men were accused of doing it, and were tried in the Four Courts Dublin and were found guilty on the evidence of some of the policemen from Rathowen, and were sentenced to a month's imprisonment in Kilmainham Jail - these men were James McLoughlin, John McLoughlin
