    ago the number of houses in Athlone was roughly 1,000, half of which were thatched and the rest slated. They were built generally of limestone although bricks were made in Carricknaughton. This industry was carried on there till about ten years ago. About this time also the canal was made, enabling boats, navigating the Shannon, to avoid the rapids at the Bridge.
    There were no roads at this time, travel was done on horseback, and trade was carried on by means of barges on the river. Boats were very much in use. A regatta was held annually on Lough Ree in August and lasted for four days.
