- (continued from previous page)attached to the ring. The bow is looped around the cows neck. The old people called this bow a gad. This was made in the forge from a piece of round iron 3 1/2 feet long and a 1/2 inch wide.
An old horse shoe is lucky to hang in the cowhouse with the round side down to keep in the luck. Old people liked to see the swallows build their nests in the cowhouses. They said they brought milk to the cows and kept them from taking milk fever. This was a fatal complaint in olden times until they discovered a very simple remedy. They pump air into the udder or elder and give the cow rum to drink and she is well in three hours. A sprig of palm blessed Palm Sunday is hung in the cowhouse.
