- People used to make their own candles about forty years ago. They used to gather rushes and partly peel them. Then they dipped them in grease and left them to dry. When they were dry they would burn. They were the only means of light the people had. Every family made their own candles.
The women used to spin on a small wheel. Then they used to roll the woollen thread in hanks and they knew how many cuts in a hank before sending it to the weaver.
