- About forty persons died of famine in this district during the penal time. They could not get coffins and there was a public coffin in Carrickboy with a false bottom in it that they had to immediately return as soon as they let the corps into the grave. Many corps were wheeled to a graveyard on wheel or turf barrows. Nine children belonging to one person near Carrickboy died of famine. The Carne mill was broken into to get any meal that was there. Many people had to subsist on red nettle roots which they dug out of the soil and boiled. In some cases people who had turnips(continues on next page)
