    and pulled by hand to knock out dust and weeds that were mixed with it.
    The thatcher then combed all the old decayed thatch off the house, and with a stopler, mallet and rake commenced to thatch. The stopler was a wooden handle, and had two iron prongs which pressed the straw into place under the thatch that was not removed, the mallet struck it down to keep it in place too, and then some water was thrown on it, and a rake used to comb it down so the rain could run freely from the top to the eve.
