    Old Houses
    26th May, 1938.
    The houses that were long ago were built of mud and rocks. Some houses only had one room, and it served as a kitchen and bedroom.
    The bed was in the end of the room, and there was only one window on the house beside the bed.
    The roof was made of straw, and rushes, and the chimneys were made of old boxes, and the floor was made of clay.
    There used to be no "arch", but a "hob", which the old people called a bird's nest.
    Some of the houses had no chimneys at all, so they used to put a hole on the roof to let the smoke out.
