Historical Tradition
15th June, 1938. My grandmother aged 77, and who is living in the townland of Toneywarden, in the parish of Granard, Co. Longford, told me this story about Cromwell, and she heard it from her grandmother.
In 1656 when Cromwell was in Ireland, he passed through the townland of Toneywarden with his army.
As he was going by he told his army to wave their swords at all the people to make them afraid.
One of the soldiers did not do this, so Cromwell lifted his sword and killed the soldier.
