    being hurt. A captain was appointed but the rules that were at that time were quite different to what they are now. Oftentimes the ditches were in some cases used as goal-posts on each side of the field and whichever side kicked the ball from one side of the field to the other won a goal. Oftentimes when two parishes would challenge each other to play a game of football a field was appointed midway between each parish and whichever side kicked the ball across the country home won the game.
