The place we had to land upon
    Was a dismal barren shore.
    Convicts swarmed round us
We could count them by the score.
They swarmed all around us and bade us understand.
That twas only Snakes and Tyrants
That ruled in Van Diemans Land.
The bed we had to lie upon
Was built of sods and clay
With old mown grass to sleep there on.
And dare we one word say.
    We were beaten and illtreated
They sold us out of hand
Then put us to the traces boys
    To plough Van Diemans Land.
Last night as I lay on that bed
    I dreamed a happy dream
I thought I was at home again
    Walking by a Silver stream
My own little Girl was by my side
We were strolling hand in hand.
When I awoke my Heart was Broke
I was in Van Diemans Land.
