- In 1798 Castlebridge was a very thriving place and the village here was the capital of the Shelmalier country.
It was a man from Castlebridge who spread the news of the "Rising" after the burning of Fr Murphy's little wooden Chapel at Boolavogue where Fr John Murphy was Pastor.
The men from here who were famous in '98 were Fr Philip Roche, General Edward Roche, who led the insurgents to Vinegar Hill and other places.(continues on next page)- Collector
