of the year the butter becomes scarce and the cream not as rich. The people say someone takes the milk from the cows at night. So they try some of their plans to find out who took their milk.
One of the ways to find out who took the milk is to put a coulter of a plough in the fire and hook a chain to it and put it around the churn; and the first person to come in after this is done, is the one who took the butter, and who milked the cows at night.
Some people clean out the well on the first day of May, and they say they will have butter for the whole year. The old people say that if you went into a dairy and a person was churning and you did not "take a heat at it" you would take away the butter.
