  1. (continued from previous page)
disease in cattle or in pigs, furze-blossoms, pennyleaf, guiltoc-blossoms, elder-berries, foram, marsh-mellows (and another which I do not know the name of) are collected.
They are boiled in lard, and a little butter is added in the boiling. It is then strained into jars and is ready for use. This preparation is known as "Blast -ointment."
When applying the ointment, it is rubbed first on the mouth, then on the nose and into the nostrils, on the eyes, into the ears, on the horns and down the back-bone to the tail. It is then rubbed across the shoulders and across the hips in the form of a double cross. The udder and teats are then rubbed and the application is complete. If it is performed properly the animal is certain to be cured.
The herbs used in the ointment must be picked in May.
