- (continued from previous page)National Schools in this Parish as we have to day. People had to teach under hedges.Hedge schools existed in this parish namely in Tomfarney Ballmackessy and Coolaught. A man named Shiel taught in Tomfarney, and a man named Boyers taught in Ballymackessy.They were paid by the pupils and by kindness. The pupils learned how to read, write and do Arithmetic.They learned no Irish, and any books that the pupils had the teacher explained them to them. The pupils wrote with a feather out of a goose for a pen, and ink made out of blackberries.
