- (There has been a Scotch Colony in Clara since the beginning of the Jute Factory 1865)
When the Scotch come into a house after twelve o'clock on New Years Eve they always bring something to eat or drink with them because they say you will have food for the rest of the next year. They call this bringing in the New Year or Hogmanay. The Scotch always throw out the ashes before twelve o'clock on New Year's Eve because they don't believe in throwing out anything on New Year's day. They believe in bringing out nothing but to bring in things. There is always a service in the Church and in the Chapel on New Year's day.On New Years day boys go round from door to door dressed like the "Wren Boys" and they ask for money and people give it to them. When they are finished they divide the money between them. The people usually have a goose or a turkey for their dinner that day.- Collector
