Rush candles were made about sixty years ago. One person got as much chick rushes as lasted a couple of weeks for one house. These rushes were skinned and soaked in bacon grease. a piece of bacon was fried in a "grysed and the rushes were soaked in the gruis The "gryset" was an artical made from ironwith three feet and a handle and a seperate plase to leave the rushes soaking. There are very few grysets safe in this district now. A candle was lighted when it was needed. One candle lasted about one hour.
