- The houses in the olden times were mostly thatched in my district. The old houses had a bed in the kitchen. It was usually called the settle bed. The fire was usually at the gable end. The floors were made of clay and stones. There are two doors on most of the houses in the district a half door and a big one. There were turf and sods and sticks burned but I never heard of coal being used. Rush candles were made locally and were burnt mostly.
