- Once upon a time there lived in the County Meath an old man who was nicknamed "Pat the Plant," because he made his living by selling plants.
This man had a wife who was blind and a son who was a simpleton. When the old man died his wife and son had no other way of living except to beg from door to door
The son who was nicknamed "Pat Himself" always carried in his hand a heavy ash plant. One very hot day the poor mother got very tired and she asked Pat would he be sure and keep everything away from her if she lay down in the shade to have a sleep.
