The people had no oil lamps or candles long ago as we have at present. The first candles ever made were rush candles. This is the way that they were made. The people (wa) would get a red hot tongs and rub it on mutton fat over a grisset to let the fat melt into the grisset. Then they would peel the most of the skin of some (rushed) rushes. After that they would dip the rushes one by one with a little bit of skin on them into the grisset.- Collector
