Somewhere near the table on which the corpse lay a smaller table was placed on which were plenty of tobacco and long pipes for the people to smoke. Some one went to the nearest town with a horse and cart and brought home any amount of whiskey and porter and if possible, poteen. The women of the houses gave tea and bread to those that came to the wake. They had competitions in singing. They told stories and played games and tricks.
