  1. Edward McCabe was born in Ardlow Virginia Co Cavan in the year 1861. He went in early life to work beside the Mersey, and there he swiftly found fame with Liverpool and Sefton Harriers. His first appearance on the track at the age of nineteen was signalled by a noteworthy victory in a mile handicap. Soon he was winning distinction among first flight competition from the Midland and Northern clubs of England; and in half mile events he was gradually drawn back to the scratch-mark untill he became recognised as the man to watch.
    By no means did Edward McCabe confine his activities to mile and half mile events though he was invariably seen battling out tremendous finishes over these distances. On cross country courses honours were also sought by this sturdy Cavanman.
    Liverpool, Stoke and practically every venue in Lancashire were the scenes of his early triumphs before he appeared at Ballsbridge in 1885, and
