- Long ago every farmer had a lime kiln. It was a round shaped building with a hollow in the centre. There was a pipe at the bottom to let in air to keep the fire lighted. First there was a layer of turf put on the bottom and then a layer of limestone and so on until the kiln was filled. Then the fire was lighted.
