    Some of the old people have stories connected with the famine times. The famine affected this district. The district was very thickly populated. The people still point out houses then occupied and now in ruins.
    The blight is a disease or germ that comes and eats the leaves away. The top decays away and the potatoes cease growing. They decayed away in the ground. The seed potatoes were very scarce for the following year. The people talk a great deal about the famine Times and other periods of distress due to the failure of the potato crop.
    The people used turnips and oaten meal. Government relief reached the country after some time. Great sickness followed the hunger because the people ate sea weed and it was the cause of much of the disease.
