  1. When a man wanted a wife long ago he used to send a friend with a bottle of whiskey to the house of his intended partner, and he would produce the bottle, and send the whiskey out copiously to the intended father in law, and mother-in-law.
    When he had the old couple half drunk he tried to get as much of a dowry as possible. When the marriage took place that night straw men came round and skulked for whiskey.
