  1. There are fairy forts in the school district. There is one in the townland of Drumleague, Cootehill and another in Gorteen Cootehill. Standing on one of these forts it is possible to see seven forts from it. These forts are never cultivated for the people are afraid to cultivate them, as they think they are the abode of fairies or some such spirits. Nothing grows on them, but bushes. They are surrounded by high ditches. They are round in shape, and are always on tops of hills. There are deep trenches outside these hedges with narrow places to enter them. On these forts fairies are supposed to live. In times gone by no one dared enter these forts, because it was supposed that they would be brought astray if they did so
