  1. Long ago there were no National schools and the people were all taught at hedge schools.
    This kind of school was situated under the shade of a tree in the open air.
    There was a hedge school in my district long ago. To this the girls and boys of the district gathered and the chief subjects they practised were reading writing and arithmetic. The chief language used was Irish.
    A well learned country man taught in these schools and the scholars brought a penny each week to pay their teacher.
