    spoken by the pupils, but the teacher being too old to learn it, never spoke it. He taught English because he thought Irish was of no use to the pupils when grown up and gone to foreign countries. the pupils worked on slates with slate pencils. The seats were made of large flat boards supported by thick logs of timber. There was no blackboard but when ever writing was neccessary it was written on a stone, It was not compulsory to go to school, but the children went as often as they could. The school
