- The famine was never very bad around this district. The people used to make porridge from the oaten meal. After a while they became poorer, and they had to buy yellow meal. The men used only get two meals a day. They used to get porridge in the morning and potatoes for their dinner. Another person told me this story.
There was a woman one time working a farm. She used to milk cows. She had a little hut in the fields. She used to stop in the hut morning and night. She used to separate the milk every morning. The woman used to boil a pot of separated milk till it became curds and whey. When the workmen were going home they used to go in to the hut, and cut the curds. This would keep the hunger off them until the next morning.- Collector
