    Long ago there lived Downeses where Paddy Haugh lives at present. One day Downes was crooking a drain just inside the ditch near Connells. There is a well near it and they call it a spaw well and when he was crooking he found big long black roots and he showed them to some clever person and he made dye out of the roots as black as sut (soot).
