  2. Many, many years ago there was a hedge school up in Killard near where Shaughnessy is now. Paddy McMahon that was the teacher there. He received no payment only what the boys brought a penny or two.
    It was a day school and a night school and in the nights every boy had to bring two sods of turf to keep the fire going. But the people that time were always hungry for learning and they did mind how far they had to come to a school
