    There is a piece of hair cut off the animal which marks it.

    It is an old custom in this part of the country on May eve to gather May flowers and scatter them round the doors of houses. The children go along the banks of rivers or in swampy places to gather the May flowers. They put them round the doors and windows to keep the fairies away from the houses.
