  1. About two miles from Arva in the townland of Canaghan on the farm of John Masterson stands a lone bush. About sixty years ago a gang of men were building a ditch and as the lone bush was in the way they sent a man to cut it. As he went to strike the first stroke he heard a voice saying, "Let that alone." He went back to the men and told them that he was not good at cutting, and asked them to lend up another man. A second man went up and the same thing happened. When he went back he told what he had heard and then the first man told what he had heard also. Nobody ever interfered with it after that.
    A lone buch in this locality means a bush which stands by itself in a field. It is either a blackthorn or a whitethorn. A large tree such as a beech or an oak standing by itself would
