- As the ice drifted the hills of Ireland were smoothed into the curves which we know so well. Rocks were carried into valleys, gravel and sand were spread over the place. Good soil was made which would be tilled and cropped in future ages. Ireland was complete at last but for two thousand years more it remained joined to Britain and the continent by slender bridges of land. Trees, shrubs, flowers animals came into Ireland by then.
