It is said that the work of a million men in North America is destroyed every year by insects. Not only in America, but wherever man plants and ploughs, the insects fight with him for possession of the earth. Taking the population of the world at a round figure of one thousand million, we should be able, if it were not for our insect enemies, to feed and clothe no less than a hundred million more human beings than at present; for insects destroyed a tenth part of all crops.
