- Potatoes grow best on sandy land. There are many names for potatoes such as May Queens, Arron and many other names. Drills should be made 18 inches apart. It is best to dig them out instead of ploughing them out. This should be done in the month of October, before the frost sets in. They should be stored in [?] pits covered with straw and earth. The earth should be one foot six inches deep. Pits are sometimes thatched as a safe guard against against black frost.
