Cricket was played in the same way as nowadays only the bat was different. The sides of the bat had a small lare of cement covered with tar. Horse racing was far different. The horses had no number cloth, the saddles were made of bad leather and often times broke. There were no railings or stands on a course and the jumps were made of poles. Most of the jockeys smoked pipes when riding.- Collector
