- The old custom of not spending money and of throwing no dust or refuse out of the home is still kept up. We heard of "midnight Mass" in the long ago. Doors are thrown open about ten minutes to twelve on New Years Eve to let the old year out and to let the new year in. There is always an anxious time on the morning of New Year's Day lest any illdisposed person should be the first to enter the house and sometimes doors are kept religiously closed until some person known to be "good natured" first calls and that person gets a very essuring and cordial invitation to "come in". It is supposed to be a lucky day to start business negotiations but no actual bargains are made axcept at fairs.
