“Some years ago there lived in this district Camphire, Cappoquin, Co. Waterford, a middle-aged spinster who owned a little shop.”

One Summer she decided to give herself a treat by spending the weekend at the seaside. She had no one who would take care of the shop while she was absent and was obliged to lock it up. She had unfortunately forgotten to let the merchant know of her intended absence and he being due next day, a letter would not reach him in time. So she attached a placard to the shop-door which read "Leave nothing", meaning of course, to have the merchant leave no goods. This done, she closed up the shop and went off. Some boys of the place raided the shop and put up another placard bearing the inscription "Nothing left". When the lady returned she found that her wishes had been amply complied with.
