   In Salt Mills lonely pound
   Where I spend the weary hours
   Listening to the ocean's sound.

   These men they are so cruel
   They think but of the law
   My food is poor and scanty
   Just a bite of oaten straw.

   As I watch the Hook light flashing
   Through the rusty iron gate,
   It makes me sad and weary
   Lonely waiting for my fate.
   For to-morrow I'll be auctioned
   And heavy is my cross
   To a tinker down from Carrick
   Or a joulter up from Ross.

   But if ever I will get my freedom
   I swear I will go back
   To view the lights of Passage
   From the hills of Ballyhack.
