paid a visit to Manann but was gruffly told that he would not be allowed to see him. The saint paid and extra visit and Manann who had shut himself up in his castle again refuesed to admit him. St. Patrick called again and met with the third refusal. St. Patrick now determined to impose an exemplary punishment on Manann. Manann was mysteriously cast into the deep lake where he kept his treasure and turned into an eel of no mean proportions. To this day Manann still remains as an eel guarding his buried hoard of gold in the depths of the lake". Manann Castle situated in a rather thinly peopled part of the country and surrounded by thick plantations was more or less shunned by the people of Doneghmoyne. The dark and treacherous looking lakes, and the eerie atmosphere of the whole place had a certain repelling influence which in the course of centuries bacame the subject of many weird stories.

Bashford was sub-agent ot Tristran Kennedy esq. agent to the Marquis of Bath owner of the estate which covered a great deal of the Barony of Farney. Bashford was the official sub agent on the estate about the period (1835 - 1850),
