however that the eel being a somewhat mysterious kind of fish gave great scope to popular imagination. A story of an eel and buried treasure has been put down already in this book.

    Method of Catching Eels:-
The popular method was by means of a set-line. A piece of fishing line about 6 feet in length with hook attached was tied to a short stick on the bank of a bog hole and then cast into the water and left there overnight. The following morning the set line was drawn up, and usually there was an eel on the hook. In his efforts to escape the eel generally had himself enmesged in a mass of weeds. The bait used was worm.
